Always Drive Safely in School Zones
Now that it is fall, kids are back in school which means kids are being dropped of at or walking to school. When kids are jumping out of cars and buses, it is very important to exercise extra care when driving near or around schools. Parents and caregivers are often harried and distracted when picking up their child at school. This can lead to a potentially dangerous situation. When you are near a school, especially at a time when children are entering or leaving the school, one should always follow these rules:
Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits
- Avoid stopping or double parking on crosswalks to let children out of the car. This can force children in the crosswalk to run around the car and into traffic.
- Avoid dropping off or picking up children across the street from the school. This can force kids to unnecessarily cross busy streets mid-block instead of at a crosswalk.
- Always stop for a school bus with its red overhead lights flashing, regardless of the direction from which the driver is approaching.
- Be mindful of children walking or bicycling in areas near and around the school. Kids may dart into the street without looking for traffic.
